Hiking in Saas Grund
By Lowen & Marin – Summer 2023
This summer, we went to a high altitude to see some of the big mountain peaks in the Swiss Alps. We took the lifts as high as we could in Saas Grund and took on one of the coolest hikes we’ve ever done: the Hohsaas Panorama Peak Trail.
We took the cable car from Saas-Grund to Hohsaas (approximately 3,100 m). It was awesome looking down on all 18 of the 4,000 m peaks in the valley; it felt like the sky was our playground!
Then we found it, a freezing cold glacier lake tucked beneath the peaks! We took off our shoes and dipped our toes in… for about five seconds. It was SO cold it felt like our feet had turned to ice cubes! But it was the best kind of freezing, the kind that makes you laugh and shout and feel totally alive.
As we hiked on, we spotted climbers crossing the glacier way up in the distance. Tiny dots on a huge sheet of white. It made us feel small in the best way, as if we were part of something truly big and wild. After we finished the loop, we took a short drive into Saas Fee, found a quiet spot to camp in our van, and made dinner while the sun set behind the mountains.
Pasta never tastes as good as it does after a long hike! We went to bed with tired legs, warm bellies, and glacier dreams in our heads.
Adventure tip: Don’t forget your water bottle, sunglasses, and a spoon for mountain dinner.
